Fact of the day: 4th August

On this day in 1914 Germany invaded Belgium. In response, Belgium and the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. The United States declares its neutrality.

That’s right. One hundred years ago today, the UK declared war on Germany and entered, what would become known as the First World War.

It was a war that many people thought would be over by Christmas. And because of that, there was no shortfall of people wanting to join up – Young boys and men were worried that they would miss out on the fighting otherwise. This even led to boys under the age of eighteen joining up so that they too could also be involved.
